This latest failure, which occurred on Wednesday, February 12, marks the first grid collapse of 2025.
The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the outage in a post on X, stating that the system failure happened at exactly 11:34 AM local time.
“Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 12th February 2025 at 11:34hrs affecting all our feeders.
“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders,” the company announced.
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company acknowledged the issue, informing customers that the grid failure had caused widespread blackouts in its service areas.
“Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today causing a power outage across our franchise areas,” the post reads
“While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised.”
Additionally, an X account dedicated to tracking Nigeria’s power grid disruptions reported, “There was a “GRID DISTURBANCE” before noon today (Wednesday). Parts of the country experienced an outage.”
This collapse follows a troubling trend, as the national grid reportedly failed around 12 times in 2024.
