The court found Peter Nwachukwu guilty of causing Osinachi’s death on April 8, 2022.
According to the judge, the prosecution successfully proved its case against him beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction.
Nwachukwu was first charged on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.
He faced a 23-count charge that included culpable homicide, spousal abuse, child cruelty, and criminal intimidation.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, who testified as the fourth and fifth witnesses.
The court also admitted 25 documents as evidence.
In his defense, Nwachukwu took the stand himself and called four additional witnesses, submitting four exhibits.
Before sentencing, Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for a lighter punishment, but the prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to uphold the law strictly.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on the charge of culpable homicide.
The court gave the defendant six months in prison for Count 10 and three years in prison for Count 11. He was also fined N500,000 for Count 6 and N200,000 for Count 7.
KanyiDaily recalls that Osinachi’s sister, Favour Madu told the court that her sister was treated like an animal by her husband, Peter Nwachukwu.
