House Of Reps Summon Benue, Zamfara Governors To Address Rising Insecurity

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has invited the governors of Benue and Zamfara states, Hyacinth Alia and Dauda Lawal.

The lawmakers asked the governors and the speakers of both state assemblies, to appear before the House on Thursday, May 8.

This was revealed in a statement issued Friday by the committee’s media head, Chooks Oko.

The committee wants both the executive and legislative arms of the two states to explain why the House of Representatives shouldn’t take over their duties due to worsening insecurity in their regions.

The invitation follows a petition filed by a civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, which urged the federal lawmakers to step in and assume the roles of the two state assemblies.

Committee Chairman Mike Etaba, who signed the summons, said the invited officials are already familiar with the issues.

Etaba said, “Ours is to ensure that the rule of law is upheld at all times. The parties have a wonderful opportunity to state their cases clearly so that Nigerians can know what is going on. Anarchy would never be given any space in our polity”.
