Four Policemen Killed As Suspected Herdsmen Attack Benue Community

Four police officers were reportedly killed on Sunday during an attack by suspected herdsmen in Udei, a community in Benue State.

A local resident who spoke with Channels Television, said the officers had arrived in response to a distress call from the community.

When they got there, the policemen reportedly told local youths to stand down, thinking there was no immediate threat.

The officers then fired warning shots into the air, but were met with heavy gunfire from suspected herdsmen who had allegedly been hiding in ambush.

It was gathered that four police officers were killed in the attack.

At about 3 pm, when the mobile police personnel arrived in response to our distress call, we told them the armed herdsmen were lurking at Udei community but they didn’t believe us and asked us to pull back.

“The police fired warning shots into the air, and immediately the herdsmen opened fire, killing four policemen on the spot,” the source said.

The attack triggered panic, forcing residents to flee Udei, a community located just a few kilometres from Yelwata, where suspected herdsmen killed several villagers on June 13, 2025.

Residents of nearby Ortese and Daudu communities were also seen running for safety, as a gun battle broke out between the attackers and a joint security team led by the Nigerian Army.

As of the time this report was filed, the police had not issued an official statement, despite efforts to reach the Benue State command’s spokesperson, Udeme Edet, for comment.

KanyiDaily recalls that over 10 people were recently killed in a brutal attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the Aguamede area of Eha-Amufu, located in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.
