Protesters under the #EndBadGovernance banner gathered early Thursday morning at Awolowo Road, near the Ikeja bridge in Lagos, to mark Democracy Day with a demonstration.
Around 7:30 a.m., demonstrators had already begun arriving, calling out what they see as a lack of true democracy in Nigeria.
The protesters also voiced their frustration over the absence of genuine democracy in Nigeria, rising hunger, hardship, and inequality under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, now two years in.
The protest has started, but security forces, including police officers, are heavily stationed in the area.
Protesters gathered Thursday morning under the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos, calling on the federal government to reverse several controversial policies introduced by the current administration.
Despite a strong presence of security personnel, the demonstrators held up placards with messages like “Reverse Electricity Tariff Hike” and “No One Deserves a Death Sentence for Protesting Against Hunger,” highlighting growing public frustration over the high cost of living.
Lagos State Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the protest was ongoing but assured the public that there was no reason to panic.
“Adequate security on ground for celebrants and protesters alike. No cause for alarm. Your safety and security remain our priority,” he said.
Tensions between the protest organizers and the Lagos State Police Command had been building in the days leading up to the event.
