Police Inspector Shot Dead By His 10-Year-Old Son In Anambra

A tragic incident unfolded in Anambra State after a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his father, a police inspector, during a visit to his workplace.

The officer, identified as Inspector Okolie Amechi, was on duty at Polaris Bank along Zik Avenue in Awka on Sunday night, June 15, when the incident happened.

Amechi’s three sons had come to see him at work, but things took a devastating turn when the oldest, Dominion Vincent, unknowingly handled his father’s rifle.

Dominion was reportedly playing with the loaded AK-47 rifle, unaware that it was ready to fire.

He pulled the trigger from behind his father, hitting him fatally in the spine.

A bullet also struck his 6-year-old brother, Emmanuel, injuring him in the back and right hand.

Both were quickly rushed to Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital.

Unfortunately, Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead on arrival while Emmanuel is said to be in stable condition and receiving treatment.

The rifle was recovered and secured by authorities, and the case has now been transferred to the Central Police Station in Awka for a full investigation.

A police report confirmed the incident, stating that Inspector Amechi’s weapon had been left cocked and without the safety engaged at the time of the visit by his sons.

A message confirming the shooting, seen by SaharaReporters, reads: “Good evening, Sir. Incident Report – Accidental Discharge – 15/06/2026. 

“Regret to inform you that on the above date, at about 9:40 p.m., Inspector Okolie Amechi (AP/No. 262498), who was on duty at Polaris Bank, Zik Avenue by Okeke Street, Awka, was visited by his three sons: Dominion Vincent (male, 10 years), Wisdom Vincent (male, 8 years), Emmanuel Vincent (male, 6 years).” 

“Unknown to the first son, Dominion, his father’s service AK-47 rifle (Breach No. BA360691, loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm ammunition) had been negligently cocked and left without the safety on.”
