The Labour Party has appointed new interim leaders to steer the party until its next national convention.

Senator Usman Nenadi was elected as the Interim National Chairman, while Senator Darlington Nwokocha was named the Interim National Secretary during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Friday in Abuja.
The newly formed interim working committee will oversee the party’s activities until a fresh National Executive Committee (NEC) is elected at the upcoming convention.
During the meeting, the NEC also approved a timeline for the party’s internal elections, from ward to national level.
The party’s national secretariat has been instructed to publish detailed guidelines and timelines to ensure free, fair, and transparent congresses and conventions across all levels.
Friday’s meeting was attended by key figures in the party, including Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who is currently the party’s only elected governor.
Speaking at the event, Ajaero emphasised that the Labour Party remains a political platform for everyday Nigerians and warned against imposters claiming leadership without the backing of the Labour movement.
“Anyone who is not with us and is not working with the Labour force and claims to be the party’s chairman is a daydreamer. When the day of reckoning comes, we will say we don’t know you,” Ajaero said.
He also encouraged party members not to be discouraged by internal challenges, urging them to stay focused as the party works to restructure and reposition itself.
“The council which formed the party is very much with them and we have not abandoned the party. I want us to be focused, not distracted. There is a need to restructure this party, rebrand it, because that is the only way this party can work,” he added.
Governor Alex Otti also addressed the gathering, stressing the need to rebuild and unify the party.
He said the NEC meeting was in line with a recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed Nenadi as the party’s rightful chairman.
“As law-abiding people, we felt we should obey the Supreme Court judgement, and what we are here to do is to begin a structured process by formalizing some key committees like the interim national working committee, which will oversee all party activities till the party’s convention, when elections for a new NEC will be conducted,” Otti said.
He also advised the faction led by Julius Abure to respect the court’s ruling and allow the party to move forward.
While acknowledging the NLC’s role in founding the Labour Party, Otti pointed out that the party has grown beyond the control of any single group or institution.
“The Labour Party is now bigger than just the NLC,” he said as he urged members to set aside differences and focus on making the Labour Party a truly national political force.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Labour Party recently threw its support behind Peter Obi’s involvement in the ADC opposition coalition and dismissed claims that he was given a 48-hour ultimatum to quit the party.
