In a video making rounds on social media, a group of Ghanaians were seen protesting, claiming Nigerians were behaving in ways that clash with local values and should be sent home.
Reacting to the situation, Aniekan, who represents Akwa Ibom North-East, said it’s unfair to label all Nigerians as troublemakers.
The lawmaker stressed that most Nigerians living abroad are decent, hardworking, and law-abiding citizens.
He said, “Nigerians are hardworking people and not criminals as purported. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves.
“While there may be a few bad individuals among them, the generality of Nigerians are peaceful and law-abiding people.”
He highlighted the strong historical ties between Nigeria and Ghana and called for both nations to remain united, especially under the principles of ECOWAS and regional cooperation.
“Ghana and Nigeria are brothers and should continue to live in peace. Dialogue has proven countless times to be a tool for peace and should be deployed,” he said.
Aniekan also called on Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm, avoid any confrontations, and not give in to provocation or retaliatory actions.
He noted that Bianca Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is actively engaging with Ghanaian officials to resolve the matter through diplomatic channels.
The senator warned against using inflammatory language that could worsen the situation and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims, especially those suggesting that Nigerian-owned shops and properties were being attacked.
Aniekan praised the swift response from both countries’ diplomatic representatives and thanked the high commissioners and the minister for their prompt action to ease tensions.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Nigerian Police plans to prosecute three Ghanaian businessmen for allegedly forging documents and impersonating others in connection to a land ownership dispute at River Park Estate in Lugbe, Abuja.
