The incident happened during a community-led campaign tagged “No to Drug Abuse”, which was launched by the youth leadership to tackle rising drug use in the area.

Residents said drug abuse has devastated many families in Nkpolu, with some people reportedly selling off their homes and properties just to sustain their addiction.

During the campaign, the youths raided a suspected drug den and caught three men, including a police officer who identified himself as Joshua Eyong from the Obio/Akpor division.

In a video shared online, Eyong showed his police identity card and did not openly deny the accusations when questioned by the youths.

Nkpolu Youth President, Owhonda Chamberlain, explained that the action was part of their collective decision to rid the community of drugs.

He lamented that drug abuse has ruined the lives of many young people, with some losing their homes after trading them for money to buy drugs.

Chamberlain said: “There is a campaign going on in our community headed by the youths of Nkpolu, following the powers given to me as the youth president to ensure that there are no drugs in our community.

“We discovered that some of our children do not have homes. We found that the property that their parents struggled with is being sold for drugs. What they do is that after taking drugs worth N3,000,000, they sell their house for N4,000,000.

“The drug dealer will now give them N1,000,000. Nkpolu has decided that there will be no drug dealer, no drug smoker in our community again. If you want to take drugs, go to Rumuaghorlu, go to hotels. It should not be something that should be done here.”

Reacting to the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers State, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the command became aware of the situation after seeing the viral video.

She added that the officer in question has denied taking drugs and that a formal investigation into the matter is already underway.
