Tobi Amusan Wins Silver In 100m Hurdles At Tokyo World Championships

Nigeria’s world record holder, Tobi Amusan, won the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, finishing the final in 12.29 seconds.

Nigeria’s athlete Tobi Amusan and Switzerland’s athlete Ditaji Kambundji celebrate after the women’s 100m hurdles final during the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on September 15, 2025.

The world record holder ran a strong race from start to finish but was edged out by Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who took gold with a national record of 12.24 seconds.

Grace Stark of the United States claimed bronze in 12.34 seconds, while Masai Russell came fourth in 12.44 seconds.

Tobi Amusan, 28, was aiming to defend the world title she captured in Oregon in 2022, when she made history as the first Nigerian and African to win the 100m hurdles at the World Championships.

Although she didn’t take gold this time, the silver adds to her impressive list of achievements, which includes a world record of 12.12 seconds, multiple Diamond League wins, and a Commonwealth Games title.

After missing the finals at the last Olympics in Paris, Amusan has once again shown that she remains a top contender in her event.

Nigeria’s medal hopes in Tokyo now turn to Ezekiel Nathaniel, who has reached the semifinals of the men’s 400m hurdles.

The 21-year-old, one of Africa’s rising hurdlers, ran 48.37 seconds to secure his spot in the semifinals. He kept his composure throughout the race, finishing strongly against tough competition.

Nathaniel will aim to advance from Wednesday’s semifinal as he targets a podium finish in the final.

KanyiDaily recalls that in May, Tobi Amusan won the women’s 100m hurdles at the Diamond League event in Rabat, Morocco.
