India Beats Nigeria To Win Hosting Rights For 2030 Commonwealth Games

Ahmedabad, India, has been selected as the preferred host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, beating a competing bid from Abuja, Nigeria.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Commonwealth Sport, which confirmed that the event will mark the centenary of the Games.

This will be the second time in two decades that India will host the prestigious event.

The decision, made by an evaluation panel from Commonwealth Sport, is expected to be approved during the organization’s General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.

Ahmedabad, located in western India, stood out for its world-class sporting infrastructure, including the Narendra Modi Stadium, which is the largest in the world, with a seating capacity of 132,000. The stadium notably hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final.

With a population of over five million, Ahmedabad has also been discussed as a potential future Olympic host city, reflecting its growing global sporting profile.

Dr. P. T. Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, said hosting the 2030 Games would be a chance to motivate young people, build stronger international connections, and celebrate unity across the Commonwealth.

“We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth,” she said.

India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi.

This marks the second time Nigeria has lost a bid to host the Games, following its unsuccessful attempt to host the 2014 edition in Abuja, which was awarded to Glasgow.
