China Warns US Against Interfering In Nigeria’s Affairs After Trump’s Military Threat

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China rejects any attempt to use religion or human rights issues as justification for meddling in another country’s domestic matters.

“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on the development path suited to its national conditions,” Mao stated.

She added, “China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force.”

Her remarks followed Trump’s threat of possible military invasion in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians, a claim that the Nigerian government has publicly denied.

The tension between both countries deepened after the U.S. State Department, on October 31, reclassified Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), citing reports of widespread attacks on Christians.
