On Friday, October 31, Trump labeled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over what he described as the mass killing of Christians in the country.
He also warned that the U.S. could deploy troops to invade Nigeria to eliminate “Islamic terrorists” responsible for attacks on Christians.
Reacting in a statement on Sunday, Gumi condemned Trump’s remarks, calling them an insult to Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The cleric said the Nigerian government must respond firmly to such a provocation.
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it,” he wrote.
He urged the Federal Government to summon the U.S. ambassador and demand a formal apology or retraction, warning that failure to do so should lead to a review of diplomatic relations.
“President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime,” he added.
Gumi also noted that Nigeria has other international allies and should not rely solely on the United States for security or development partnerships.
“The world is no longer unipolar. Nigeria has friends elsewhere who respect our sovereignty,” he said
His statement comes amid growing reactions to Trump’s warning that the U.S. might invade Nigeria to eliminate “Islamic terrorists” allegedly responsible for attacks on Christians.
Gumi, known for advocating dialogue with terrorist, maintained that diplomacy and national pride must guide Nigeria’s response.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has dismissed U.S. claims of a Christian genocide, saying the reports are exaggerated and not reflective of the situation in Nigeria.
