FG Reopens 47 Unity Schools Weeks After Closure Over Insecurity

The Federal Government has announced that all 47 unity schools earlier closed over security concerns have now been reopened.

This was made known in a statement issued on Thursday by the Federal Ministry of Education.

The ministry said the decision followed improved security arrangements around the affected schools and reflects the government’s commitment to protecting students and keeping schools open.

Astatement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, said learning has fully resumed in the schools.

After the strengthening of security architecture within and around the affected schools, academic activities have fully resumed.

“Students have returned safely to their campuses, with many currently concluding their December academic programmes, while others have successfully completed their examinations,” the statement said.

The ministry assured parents, guardians, and the public that the safety and well-being of students remain a top priority.

It added that the government is working closely with security agencies to maintain calm and ensure a secure learning environment across the country.

“The Federal Government remains resolute in its responsibility to protect every Nigerian child and to uphold their fundamental right to education in a safe and secure environment.

“This administration places strong emphasis on human capital development and recognises education as a critical pillar for national growth and development.

“Accordingly, it remains determined to prevent any disruption to the academic calendar,” it stated.

The ministry added that the safe return of students and the smooth conduct of exams in several unity schools show the government’s determination to keep education running despite security challenges.

On November 21, the Federal Government had ordered the closure of 47 unity colleges due to growing security threats, including repeated attacks and mass abductions of students.

In Niger State, gunmen invaded St. Mary’s Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, abducting more than 300 pupils and teachers.

A similar attack in Kebbi State saw over 20 schoolgirls kidnapped from a school in Maga town.

KanyiDaily had reported that the federal government recently secured the freedom of 100 of the abducted students.
