Lagos Set To Release 91 Prisoners In Honor Of UN Human Rights Day

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the release and sentence commutation of 91 prison inmates as part of the state’s 2025 United Nations Human Rights Day activities.

The initiative highlights Lagos’ commitment to justice, legal rights, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.

During a press briefing, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, said the annual December 10 observance emphasizes the global commitment to dignity, equality, and the rule of law.

He referred to the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights as “the moral and legal compass for nations committed to justice and human dignity.”

Pedro also highlighted the state’s long-standing focus on human rights, noting the establishment of the Directorate of Citizens’ Rights in 1999.

The agency aims to empower residents, ensure access to justice, and prevent abuses.

In the past year, the Directorate handled around 1,950 petitions, resolved 1,200 cases through mediation, and is currently managing about 50 fundamental rights cases in Federal and State High Courts, involving unlawful arrests, police misconduct, property disputes, and child custody matters.

The Attorney-General outlined how the inmate releases will be carried out:

• Immediate Release: The Governor approved the release of 80 inmates who have already served over 70% of their terms.

• Phased Releases: The remaining 11 inmates will be released between January and April 2026.

• Commutation: All affected inmates currently on death row will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.

Pedro concluded by urging residents to respect the rights of others and follow the law, stressing that protecting fundamental freedoms remains central to Lagos State’s human rights agenda.

KanyiDaily also reported how 15 people were rescued after a two-storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos.
