Power Outage Hits Nigeria As National Grid Suffers Another Collapse

Several parts of Nigeria experienced power outages on Monday after the national electricity grid collapsed.

The grid failure happened on Monday afternoon, causing power supply in many areas to drop sharply, according to load data released at 3:12 p.m. on December 29, 2025.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed the incident in a post on X.

The agency, which manages power sent to the distribution companies, said supply fell to 50 megawatts as efforts to restore the grid began.

At the time of filing this report, NISO said only Abuja and Ibadan were receiving a combined 50 megawatts of power, compared to the 3,660 megawatts available on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

Figures from the electricity distribution companies showed that only two firms were getting power when the collapse occurred.

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company received 30 megawatts, while Abuja Electricity Distribution Company got 20 megawatts. All other distribution companies received zero supply.

Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola distribution companies all recorded zero megawatts, pointing to widespread outages in major cities and regions.

Total power available nationwide was just 50 megawatts, far below normal levels and not enough to keep homes, businesses, and essential services running.

The national grid has suffered several collapses in recent years, often leading to large-scale outages and slow restoration of electricity.

NISO said work to restore supply is ongoing.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Transmission Company of Nigeria nor the Federal Ministry of Power had released an official explanation for the collapse or given a timeline for full restoration.
