The Police Public Relations Officer for Edo State Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday.
Ikoedem explained that the crash happened near Iyekogba Estate Gate in Benin City.
According to him, the driver drove against traffic, forced his way through a police checkpoint barrier, then turned around and drove back toward the officers on duty, knocking them down.
“The reckless driver eventually crashed into multiple vehicles before being restrained and arrested. The injured officers are currently receiving medical attention”, the statement said.
It added that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, a 19-year-old whose name was not disclosed, was driving without a license.
The vehicle involved was a black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV valued at ₦28 million.
The car, which belongs to the suspect and has been in use since May 2024, was found to be unregistered.
Police also recovered items from the suspect, including a substance believed to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid suspected to be diluted refnol.
The statement also reminded the public that on December 24, 2025, the Edo State Police Command had urged motorists to slow down at checkpoints and cooperate with officers for safety reasons.
The command repeated the warning, saying that there “is absolutely no justifiable reason for any motorist to speed through a police checkpoint except with the intention to evade lawful checks or endanger the lives of officers on duty.”
Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, warned that anyone who attacks or tries to harm police officers on duty will face serious consequences, stressing that “enough is enough.”
The command reassured the public that it remains focused on maintaining law and order and protecting citizens.
