Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has broken his silence after gunmen attacked him in Benin City, Edo State.

The attack happened at the home of former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, where gunmen reportedly fired at the gate and several vehicles.
A video circulating online shows Peter Obi standing by the bullet-riddled gate, condemning the violence.
“This is where our democracy has reached. A former governor, and you can see what happened in front of his house, where hoodlums came shooting,” Obi said.
“I assure you this cannot continue; we have a country, and we are a part of it. We cannot have terrorism and have officials in government terrorising the citizens.”
The incident happened shortly after Obi, Odigie-Oyegun, and other political figures attended the official declaration of Barrister Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City.
Footage from the scene showed several SUV windscreens shattered and the entrance gate riddled with bullets.
Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, said the attackers followed the group from the ADC Secretariat to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence before opening fire.
He described the attack as a failed assassination attempt on the political leaders.
“Peter Obi and the leadership of the ADC are under siege and attack in Benin, Edo State. At the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress, armed individuals followed us from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
“They shot at the gate and destroyed several vehicles in what appears to be a survived assassination attempt on our lives. Democracy is in danger, ” he said.
