Students of the College of Nursing Sciences at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra State, took to the streets on Tuesday to protest a 544% increase in their school fees, which they say is unfair and too difficult to afford.

The protest followed a new fee structure that raised the annual tuition from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000.

The increase was announced in a memo dated January 23, with the school management explaining that the new charges were introduced to improve facilities and maintain higher academic standards.

However, the students argued that the new fees place a heavy financial burden on them. They pointed out that the tuition is not the only cost, as they are also required to pay ₦150,000 for hostel accommodation and ₦360,000 for feeding.

According to them, these additional expenses mean students could end up spending more than ₦1 million each year, despite the fact that many of the school’s facilities are still in poor condition.

The students also noted that newly employed nurses in Nigeria often earn between ₦74,000 and ₦150,000 monthly, making the new fees even harder to justify.

The NAUTH students are urging the school authorities to review the decision and lower the fees to a more reasonable amount.

In response, the management of the College of Nursing Sciences at NAUTH said discussions are currently taking place to address the concerns raised by the students.

Meanwhile, the Students’ Union has encouraged peaceful dialogue with the school management instead of further protests, noting that the issue reflects the wider financial challenges affecting Nigeria’s education sector.
