National Police Council Confirms Olatunji Disu As Substantive IGP

The National Police Council has approved Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, clearing the way for his name to be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

KanyiDaily recalls that Olatunji Disu was appointed acting IGP on February 25, 2026, by President Bola Tinubu after the resignation of former police chief Kayode Egbetokun.

At the time, the president, through his spokesman Bayo Onanuga, said the Police Council would meet to formally consider the appointment before sending it to the Senate for screening.

Disu officially assumed office last Wednesday during a brief ceremony at the Louis Edet House in Abuja, where President Tinubu decorated him as acting IGP.

Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to the AIG rank last year.

Earlier in his career, he worked as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and was later redeployed to Abuja as Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory under the leadership of Egbetokun.

Disu is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He also previously led the Nigeria Police Force’s Intelligence Response Team, a unit once headed by Abba Kyari.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. Over the years, he has held several positions, including Divisional Police Officer in Ago Iwoye, Ikare, Owo, Elimbu, and Elelenwo. He has also overseen Special Anti-Robbery Squad and anti-kidnapping operations in different states.

He commanded SARS units in Ondo, Oyo, and Rivers states and later served as second-in-command at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Rivers.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Disu pledged to focus on professionalism, modernization, and accountability, promising a more transparent and efficient police force under his leadership.

“My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability,” Disu told the gathering comprising top officers and family members, among others.
