The incident happened in Bagudo Local Government Area, where witnesses said the attackers arrived in large numbers and began shooting randomly at the checkpoint.
According to reports, the gunmen forced their way past the officers guarding the post and later set the police shelter at the location on fire.
The police spokesperson in the state, Bashir Usman, confirmed that two officers died during the attack.
He also said the attackers burnt the tents used by security personnel at the checkpoint.
“They killed two of our officers and burnt down the checkpoint, but the police are on top of the situation. I will issue further details,” Usman said.
This is the third violent attack recorded along the Bakin Ruwa–Maje border route recently.
Earlier incidents in the area reportedly led to the deaths of officers from the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service before the latest assault on police personnel.
