He made this known at his home in Asaba while receiving political leaders from the Delta North senatorial district.
The group was led by Delta State Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme and included both former and current lawmakers, government appointees, and other key political figures from the nine local government areas in the district.
During the meeting, former lawmaker Ndudi Elumelu moved a motion asking Okowa to contest the seat, while Nnamdi Ezechi, who represents Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani federal constituency in the House of Representatives, seconded it.
The proposal was fully supported by everyone in the delegation.
The leaders praised Okowa as an experienced administrator and a unifying figure, saying his background as both a former governor and senator makes him well-suited to represent the district effectively.
In his response, Okowa said he was deeply touched by the overwhelming support.
“I feel very loved and honoured by this show of support. For the calibre of persons here and the unity of purpose demonstrated, I have no choice but to accept,” he said.
“I was going to call His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, to request of him, because the time is now short, to help me invite some leaders, so that I can bring the news that I would like to run for the Senate. So that I won’t start going to local governments without consulting with the leaders.
“I accept your request to run for the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Delta North senatorial district.
“I want to reassure you that politics is a learning process; I will continue to learn on a daily basis.”
Okowa also thanked the Anioma people for their continued support and said he would once again depend on them as the 2027 election approaches.
He recalled how they stood by him during his successful 2011 Senate race and later during his governorship campaigns.
The former governor also apologized over what he described as a “mistake” in supporting the emergence of Ned Nwoko, who currently represents Delta North in the Senate.
