‘It Was Disrespectful’ – Lilian Afegbai Apologizes After Criticizing AMVCA For Snubbing Her

Nollywood actress, Lilian Afegbai has apologised after criticising the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) over being left out of the 2026 nomination list.

After the AMVCA nominees were announced on March 31, Lilian Afegbai expressed her frustration at the organisers, saying she believed her performance deserved recognition.

The actress specifically argued that she should have earned a nomination for her role as Idia in the movie “To Kill A Monkey.’

In her criticism at the time, the actress angerly made a harsh remark against the AMVCA, telling them to “eat their award.”

However, in a statement released on Saturday, Afegbai admitted that her reaction was inappropriate and went too far.

She said the emotional outburst came from a place of pain and disappointment, but accepted that it was still wrong.

She wrote: “This apology should have come earlier, That tweet should not have happened. No excuse.  It was disrespectful to AMVCA, the nominees, my To Kill A Monkey family, and all of you who have supported me.

“Honestly, I was disappointed. But that’s not an excuse for how I responded.

“I’ve come a long way in my journey, and for a long time I felt invisible. To Kill A Monkey felt like my “now they see me” moment, and I held on to that very tightly.

“When I wasn’t nominated, I reacted from a place of hurt, entitlement and it was out of character for me. I was wrong and I am sorry.  Please give me a chance to be better. I no go fall una hand again.”

KanyiDaily recalls that Lilian Afegbai apologised to all the women in their 30s whom she once judged over their relationship status.
