Tinubu Signs 2026 Appropriation Bill, 2025 Budget Extension

President Bola Tinubu has approved the 2026 Appropriation Bill, with total budget set at ₦68.32 trillion.

The president also signed a separate bill extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31, 2026, to June 30, 2026.

In the new budget, ₦4.799 trillion is set aside for statutory transfers, while ₦15.8 trillion will go toward servicing the country’s debt.

Recurrent spending is pegged at ₦15.4 trillion, and ₦32.2 trillion has been allocated for capital projects through the development fund.

With about half of the budget dedicated to capital expenditure, the plan focuses on boosting infrastructure, improving security, supporting economic growth, and enhancing overall living standards.

The distribution of funds is designed to balance routine government expenses, debt obligations, and investments needed to drive development and productivity.

The President also approved an amendment to the 2025 budget, allowing more time for the execution of capital projects.

This extension is expected to help government agencies complete ongoing projects and fully utilise allocated funds.

Government ministries, departments, and agencies have been directed to use the funds responsibly, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and timely delivery of projects.

Tinubu praised the National Assembly for quickly reviewing and passing the budget, highlighting the importance of cooperation between both arms of government.

He further assured Nigerians that his administration will continue to improve revenue generation, strengthen financial reforms, and invest in projects that will grow the economy, create jobs, and support vulnerable citizens.
