The first lady encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope, saying several small businesses can be started with very little money.
Speaking about the government’s efforts to improve people’s lives, Mrs Tinubu said businesses such as frying akara, roasting corn and producing kuli-kuli are affordable to start and can provide a steady source of income.
She explained that these types of businesses do not require huge capital, making them suitable for many Nigerians looking for ways to earn a living.
“We’re trying to give hope and to start akara business doesn’t take a lot of money,” Remi Tinubu said.
“To start roasting corn or somebody even said about grants, you see they’re saying that kuli-kuli doesn’t take much.”
Mrs Tinubu also revealed that some of the financial support provided by the government was given as grants instead of loans, meaning beneficiaries are not expected to pay the money back.
“We didn’t give them a loan, we gave it to them as a grant,” she stated.
The First Lady also highlighted some of the humanitarian projects she has personally supported over the years.
According to her, she donated ₦2 billion to help fight tuberculosis across the country, ₦1 billion for breast cancer programmes and another ₦500 million to tackle food malnutrition.
“I remember giving for TB, when I heard there’s so much TB cases, I gave two billion. To breast cancer, I gave a billion. To food malnutrition, I gave half a billion,” she said.
She said her office has also invested in social intervention programmes aimed at improving education and empowering Nigerians.
Remi Tinubu said these include scholarship opportunities, ICT training and partnerships with relevant government agencies.
“So in our work we’ve done, in social investment we have, in education we’ve given a little bit of scholarship, ICT training and with NIDA,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu stressed that Nigerians should focus on hope rather than despair, saying public discussions about the country’s challenges should not discourage ordinary citizens.
“The narrative has really changed to challenge the average man, whereas the average man is supposed to have hope,” she said.
She praised President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence that the administration’s programmes would continue to improve the lives of Nigerians.
“We have to renew our hope and that’s how we renew our hope,” she said.
The First Lady ended her remarks by urging citizens to remain determined despite the country’s current difficulties.
“They don’t give up, just keep, we are a very proud nation,” she said.
