June 12: President Tinubu To Address National Assembly On Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu is set to speak to a joint sitting of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of events lined up to mark Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day.

The plan was announced on Tuesday during the launch of the inter-ministerial committee put together to coordinate the nationwide celebration.

The committee was inaugurated by George Akume, the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja.

He noted that the president’s address would stand out as one of the key moments of the commemoration.

Akume described Democracy Day as a time for Nigerians to look back on the sacrifices made by those who fought to restore civilian rule.

He also honoured the figures behind the June 12, 1993 struggle, including the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

According to him, the anniversary offers the federal government a chance to highlight ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic systems and push national development forward, even in the face of current economic and social pressures.

Akume urged members of the committee to begin work without delay, pointing out that only ten days remain before the celebration.

He added that this year’s events would reflect the country’s current realities as well as the government’s focus on prudent spending.

As part of the programme, a world press conference will take place on June 4. Special Juma’at prayers are scheduled for June 5, followed by an interdenominational church service on June 7.

Other activities include a Democracy Day lecture on June 9, along with programmes targeted at youths and women on June 10.

A presidential broadcast is also expected on June 12. The celebrations will wrap up with a gala night on the same day.

KanyiDaily recalls that President Bola Tinubu recently acknowledged that Nigeria is going through a tough period but expressed confidence that the country will eventually become stronger, more stable, and more prosperous.
