The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.

INEC Postpones Nationwide Voter Revalidation Until After 2027 Elections

The decision was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by Mohammed Haruna, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

He said the move followed a meeting between the commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across the country.

“Following deliberations, the commission resolved to postpone the exercise until after the 2027 General Election,” the statement reads.

Haruna explained that the voter revalidation exercise is meant to improve the accuracy of Nigeria’s voter register by checking and updating existing voter information.

He noted that the process would help verify voter details, remove duplicate or ineligible names, and strengthen the credibility of the national voter database.

It would also allow registered voters to review and correct their personal information where needed.

The commissioner said, “INEC remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.”

The exercise was originally scheduled to begin on April 13 as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.

However, on April 5, the commission directed Resident Electoral Commissioners to stop all publicity and preparations for the exercise until further notice.
