Three police officers are dead and three others injured following a shooting in Baton Rouge, La., early today. According to officials, one suspect was killed in the shooting, which occurred along a stretch of highway about two miles from state police headquarters, but two others remain at large. The killings come on the heels of the slayings of five Dallas police officers in an ambush during a protest of the police-involved deaths of black men in Falcon Heights, Minn., and Baton Rouge. President Barack Obama said in a statement: "I condemn, in the strongest sense of the word, the attack on law enforcement in Baton Rouge."
He said there was no justification for violence against law enforcement and such attacks "are the work of cowards who speak for no-one". Mobile phone footage from the scene in Baton Rouge showed police cars arriving at a road intersection. Several shots were then heard.
Police are reported to be using a robot to check for explosives at the scene.
