The President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, has stood in defence of a former military Head of State, retired General Yakubu Gowon, who was accused of stealing half of Nigeria’s money stocked in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) during his regime.
KanyiDaily recalls that a member of United Kingdom Parliament, Tom Tugendhat, had alleged that General Gowon looted half of CBN money and moved to London when he was exiting power.
Reacting to the allegation on his Twitter page, Adesina warned against misinformation, stating that Gowon’s “honesty and integrity” are impeccable and further described him as a “great and admirable elder statesman.”
“Be careful of misinformation! H.E. General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, is a man of great honour, decency, honesty, amazing simplicity, humility and integrity. I know him. A great and admirable elder statesman of Nigeria. His honesty and integrity are impeccable,” he tweeted on Thursday.
KanyiDaily recalls that General Gowon had also denied the UK parliamentarian’s allegation saying he served Nigeria diligently with utmost fear of God.
