The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has staged a protest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, to protest against the prolonged strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
KanyiDaily recalls that ASUU had embarked on a warning strike since February 14, over the failure of the federal government to meet its demands.
Amid the strike, the government and the union have held a series of meetings, but both sides have reached no agreement on ending the seven-month-old strike.
On Monday morning, September 19, Nigerian Students gathered around the Lagos Airport amid heavy security presence to protest against the ongoing industrial action.
In a quick chat with Punch, the South-West Coordinator of NANS, Adegboye Olatununji, said security agencies had been mobilized to the scene, but they were undaunted.
“Yeah, they mobilised heavy security, but we’re undaunted. We’re there on standby,” Olatununji said.
The protesting students, who were blocked by security operatives from gaining access to the airport took over the road, preventing traffic flow both inward and outward from the facility.
NANS in their hundreds demanded an immediate end to the ASUU strike which has entered its seventh month, urging the Nigerian government to meet the demands of the striking lecturers to enable them to return to class.
They could be seen dancing around as they sing solidarity songs on the road, creating gridlock on the busy road.
KanyiDaily recalls that ASUU president, Emmanuel Osodeke said the union is ready to suspend its strike if the government shows willingness to accept its “minimum” demands.
