Funke Akindele’s ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ Becomes First Nollywood Film To Hit N1 Billion

‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ a family comedy-drama produced by actress Funke Akindele, has become the first Nollywood movie to surpass the N1 billion milestone at the Nigerian box office.

The film accomplished this remarkable feat within just three weeks, making it the fastest Nigerian movie to reach such a financial milestone.

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ not only secured its place as the highest-grossing Nollywood movie of all time, but it also elevated Funke Akindele to the status of the highest-grossing Nollywood director to date.

This historic announcement was made by FilmOne Studios in a statement issued via its Instagram page on Thursday, January 5.

The film production company said the movie “shattered records” and also “etched its name in the annals of Nollywood glory”.

The statement also appreciated Funke Akindele for her “dedication and passion” towards making the movie a success.

It reads, “Cinematic history made. A momentous achievement unfolds as #ATribeCalledJudah etches its name in the annals of Nollywood glory.

“The cinematic masterpiece has not only captured hearts but shattered records becoming the first Nollywood movie to soar past the 1 billion naira milestone at the Box Office.

“A heartfelt congratulations to the visionary producer @funkejenifaakindele whose dedication and passion brought this cultural gem to life.

“Your unwavering commitment to storytelling has not only entertained but has now etched a significant chapter in the vibrant tapestry of Nigerian cinema.”

The film had previously set records by achieving the biggest weekend opening in Nollywood, amassing over N122 million at the box office.

Within 12 days, ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ reached box office earnings of N400 million, setting a new standard for Nollywood.

By January 2, the movie had soared to become the highest-grossing Nollywood film ever, reporting an impressive N854 million at the box office.

This surpassed the previous records set by acclaimed films like ‘Battle on Buka Street’ (N668.4 million) and ‘Omo Ghetto: The Saga’ (N636.1 million).

Premiering at cinemas nationwide on December 15, ‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ directed by Adeoluwa Owu (Captain Degzy), explores the story of a woman with five sons from different fathers, each representing a different tribe.

The narrative unfolds as the boys, with their mother’s assistance, plan to rob a mall but find themselves confronted by armed robbers upon arrival.

The star-studded cast includes Funke Akindele, Boma Akpore, Ebele Okaro-Onyiuke, Etinosa Idemudia, Fathia Balogun, Jide Kene Achufusi, Nse Ikpe Etim.

Other cast members are Olayode Juliana, Olumide Oworu, Paschaline Alex, Timini Egbuson, Tobi Makinde, Uzor Arukwe, Yvonne Jegede, and Genovevah Umeh.

KanyiDaily recalls that Funke Akindele recently  revealed how she was rejected for important roles as a struggling actress because people labelled her as “ugly.”
