The 28-year-old secured the silver medal with a season-best throw of 75.48 meters during the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics.
She finished behind Canada’s Camryn Rodgers, who won gold with a throw of 76.79 meters, while China’s Jie Zhao took bronze with a throw of 74.27 meters.
This achievement comes four years after Echikunwoke was disqualified from the Tokyo Olympics due to administrative errors by Nigerian officials, even though she hadn’t tested positive for any banned substances.
Born in the U.S. to Nigerian parents, Echikunwoke originally chose to represent Nigeria in the 2020 Olympics.
However, after the disqualification incident in Tokyo, she switched her allegiance to the United States.
Annette Echikunwoke’s decision has paid off, as she is now one of America’s top hammer throwers.
Meanwhile, Nigerian World record holder, Tobi Amusan kicked off her Paris Olympics campaign with a strong win in the women’s 100m hurdles heats.
