Port Harcourt Refinery Commences Operations [Video]

Port Harcourt Refinery has finally started producing fuel after multiple delays.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) confirmed the news to newsmen on Tuesday.

NNPC spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye announced that truck loading would begin today, November 26.

Port Harcourt Refinery begins production. Truck loading starts today, Tuesday,” Soneye stated.

In an additional update on X, NNPC wrote: “NNPC Ltd Delivers Port Harcourt Refinery as plant begins truckout of products today, Tuesday 26th November 2024 at 1.45 pm. Watch the commissioning and trucking out event LIVE.”

The refinery will initially have a production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, producing products like Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), diesel, and others for the Nigerian market.

With this development, the Port Harcourt Refinery becomes the second refinery to produce petrol, following the Dangote Refinery’s start of PMS production in September.

The Port Harcourt Refinery is one of the three refineries owned by the Federal Government and operated by NNPC.

Many Nigerians are hopeful that domestic refining will reduce fuel costs by eliminating the need for importing refined products.

Located in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, the refinery has been in operation since 1965, though it had been inactive for several years before this restart.

This comes months after Dangote Refinery commenced production, assuring Nigerians of the availability of refined products.
