Senate Suspends Action On Tax Reform Bill, Schedules Meeting To Address Disputes

The Senate has ordered its Finance Committee to suspend further action on the proposed tax reform bill until after a crucial meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, announced the decision during today’s plenary session.

He revealed that a special committee has been formed to address the contentious aspects of the bill, with a meeting set for tomorrow, December 5.

This move comes after extensive discussions among lawmakers aimed at ironing out disagreements over key provisions in the bill.

These contentious issues have stirred significant debate among stakeholders in recent days.

To further resolve the disputes, the Senate leadership has also scheduled a special meeting at the National Assembly.

Chaired by the Minority Leader, the meeting will provide lawmakers an opportunity to harmonize their views, ensuring the bill addresses stakeholder concerns while aligning with the country’s priorities.

The special committee members tasked with resolving these issues include:

  • Abba Moro (Chairman)
  • Tahir Monguno
  • Aliero Adamu
  • Kalu Orji
  • Dickson Seriake
  • Zam Titus
  • Yahaya Abdullahi
  • Adeola Solomon
  • Sani Musa
  • Abiru Mukhail
  • The entire Senate leadership

This collaborative effort seeks to create a balanced and effective piece of legislation that satisfies both lawmakers and stakeholders.

This comes after former vice president, Atiku Abubakar called on the National Assembly to be objective and transparent during its public hearing on the Tax Reform Bills.
