Police Arraign Omoyele Sowore For Calling Kayoye Egbetokun ‘Illegal IG’

Omoyele Sowore, the activist behind the #RevolutionNow movement, has been arraigned by the Nigeria Police Force on cybercrime charges.

Sowore was arraigned on Wednesday, January 29, before Justice Musa Liman at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The activist had reported to the Force Criminal Investigation Department on Monday in response to a police invitation.

After questioning, he was granted administrative bail but refused to accept the conditions, choosing to remain in police custody.

Following this, the police filed a 16-count charge against him, citing cybercrime offenses.

One of the charges alleged that on December 20, 2024, Sowore referred to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as “the illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force” in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Another accusation claims that he shared a photo of Egbetokun with the caption: “Mediocrity, incompetence, corruption, a country run by characterless people can not make progress”.

Additionally, the police allege that he warned in another post: “IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria police if we don’t act now”.

Omoyele Sowore pleaded not guilty to all 16 charges.

KanyiDaily recalls that Omoyele Sowore rejected the bail condition given to him, vowing to remain in “police custody pending when the joke is over with. ”
