Kenyan Athlete, Edwin Kibet Wins 2025 Men’s Lagos City Marathon

Kenyan athlete, Edwin Kibet Koech has emerged as the champion of the men’s race at the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday.

Edwin Kibet Koech won the top spot with an impressive time of 2 hours and 14 minutes, earning the $50,000 grand prize.

This marks his second victory in the competition, having previously won in 2023.

This year’s marathon attracted around 37,000 participants who competed in the 10km and 42km races.

The race General Manager and former Nigerian long jumper, Yusuf Ali said the figure was based on the number of running kits distributed from over 60,000 registered runners.t

The figure was derived from the number of running kits distributed out of the over 60,000 runners who registered to take part,” Ali said at the event.

The 42km race kicked off at 6:30 am from the National Stadium in Surulere, while the 10km race started later at 9:30 am from the Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki. Both races concluded at Eko Atlantic City.

Celebrating its 10th edition since its launch in 2016, the Lagos City Marathon now holds a World Athletics gold label.

Organizers are aiming for a platinum label, which would make it the first marathon in Africa to achieve that status.

To accommodate the event, the Lagos State Government had earlier announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion along key routes from 5 am to 1 pm on Friday.

KanyiDaily recalls that Edwin Kibet also won 8th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon 2023.
