Manchester City Complete Signing Of Porto Midfielder, Nico Gonzalez For £50m

Manchester City have strengthened their squad with the £50 million signing of Porto midfielder, Nico Gonzalez, pushing their total spending in the January transfer window to £180 million.

According to Transfermarkt, this makes City’s expenditure the second-highest in January transfer history, behind Chelsea’s record-breaking £274 million in 2023.

Nico Gonzalez, 23, becomes City’s fifth signing of the window, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

The Spanish midfielder, who started his professional career at Barcelona in 2019, moved to Porto in July 2023.

During his time there, he made 68 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing nine assists, while also helping the team win the Portuguese Cup.

Speaking about the move, Gonzalez expressed his excitement about joining the Premier League champions saying: “This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career. I am 23 and I want to test myself in England. There’s no better club than Manchester City for me to do that.

“Look at the squad they have here – it’s unbelievable, full of world-class players. There isn’t a footballer in the world who would not want to be part of this set-up.”

Man City currently sit fifth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Liverpool, after a heavy 5-1 loss to Arsenal. The team has struggled in midfield since Rodri’s knee injury in September, which has left a gap in their defensive stability.

Gonzalez recently showcased his talent by scoring in Porto’s 1-0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League, securing their spot in the knockout phase play-offs.

He expressed his eagerness to work under Man City coach, saying: “I know the reputation Pep [Guardiola] has and I cannot wait to work with him. In fact, I am honoured he wants me to play in his team.”

City have been active in the transfer market this window, already securing signings like Egypt’s Omar Marmoush, Brazilian defender Vitor Reis, Uzbekistan’s Abdukodir Khusanov, and Sierra Leone’s Juma Bah, who has been loaned to Lens.

Nico Gonzalez’s arrival continues City’s strong connection with Barcelona.

The 23-year-old made his senior debut for Barça in 2021 and played 37 games before spending the 2022-23 season on loan at Valencia. He moved to Porto in 2023 for around £7 million.

Initially viewed as a defensive midfielder, he was once dubbed the “heir to Busquets” by former Barcelona B manager Garcia Pimienta.  However, Xavi Hernandez later deployed him in a more advanced role.

At Porto, Gonzalez played in both deep and attacking midfield roles, contributing five goals and five assists in 17 league matches this season.

Despite his versatility, some analysts question whether Gonzalez is the right fit to replace Rodri. While he brings height and physicality at 6ft 2in, he isn’t a traditional defensive midfielder.

With Manchester City in need of midfield reinforcements, Nico Gonzalez will now have the opportunity to prove his worth in the Premier League under Guardiola’s guidance.

KanyiDaily also reported that Manchester City captain, Kyle Walker joined AC Milan on loan for the rest of the season.
