Mudashiru Obasa Drags Lagos Assembly & Mojisola Meranda To Court Over His Removal

Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has taken legal action against the Assembly and its new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, over his removal from office.

Mudashiru Obasa filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, arguing that his dismissal was unlawful since it happened while the Assembly was on recess.

His case, yet to be assigned to a judge, seeks a declaration that his colleagues acted illegally by removing him in his absence.

The suit, dated February 12, 2025, and filed by his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), claims that 36 lawmakers voted him out on January 13, 2025, while he was out of the country.

Obasa is asking the court to fast-track the hearing and limit the time for the defendants to file counter-responses to seven days, with only three days for his own replies on legal points.

He argued that his removal violated sections of the Nigerian Constitution and the Assembly’s own standing rules.

He also challenged the legality of the House holding a session and making decisions during recess without the Speaker’s approval.

The former speaker insisted that the matter should be urgently resolved to prevent disruption in the state’s legislative activities.

KanyiDaily recalls that Mudashiru Obasa was impeached on January 13 by over two-thirds of the 40-member House over alleged misconduct.

Mojisola Meranda, his deputy, was immediately sworn in, making history as the first female Speaker in the South-West state.
