Nigerians are furious after telecoms giant, MTN increased the prices of data, call rates, and other services.
Although the telecom company has not officially addressed the matter, it appears to be implementing the 50% tariff hike recently approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
On January 20, 2025, the NCC announced that the new pricing structure would take effect in February.
The commission explained that while some network operators had requested an over 100% increase, the approved 50% hike was part of industry reforms aimed at sustainability.
On Tuesday morning, Nigerian subscribers took to social media to criticize the sudden increase, calling it unfair and exploitative, especially given the country’s economic challenges.
A major point of contention was the sharp rise in the price of a 15GB weekly data bundle, which jumped from “N2,000 to N6,000” overnight, leaving many users frustrated.
Social media reactions poured in, with Nigerian customers expressing their anger, demanding an explanation and possible reversal of the new pricing.
See some reactions below:
@gbolahan2211: “Imagine MTN @MTNNG increasing their tariff 15gb overnight without prior notice to customers. This is no way to do things man. I even sent them a message and they told me cause they wanna serve me better. Damn!!”
@GIFTy6286: “If they like they should increase it to 1m,we will survive”
@AfrokonnectNG: “This sudden price increase from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000 for 15GB is wild! How are people supposed to cope with such an outrageous hike? Internet access is essential for work, education, and staying connected, yet it’s being priced like a luxury.
“At this rate, users may be forced to look for alternatives or reduce their data consumption drastically. MTN really needs to reconsider this move because it’s not sustainable for the average Nigerian. What do you think about this development?”
@Gorilla23mp: “But this is almost 200% increment, I thought they said it won’t be up to 100%?”
@TheSilvapr; “Nigeria is a very difficult place to live in honestly. MTN waking up one day to increase their weekly 15gb data from 2k to 6k without prior warning is textbook insanity.
“That’s 24k in a month, almost the minimum wage of the country on data, bruh, this is hell.”
@nolifefahard: “Una Dey vote for capitalism na 😂😂😂 We will learn the hard way.”
@damilarebellz: “Una see say @AirtelNigeria and @GloWorld are two oloriburuku and backward set of network providers….mtn will continue to do as they please with their tariffs and prices because they know these other two useless network provider can’t match them.”
KanyiDaily recalls that NCC recently stopped its intended suspension of Glo subscribers from calling MTN lines for 21 days.
