Val Kilmer, the celebrated American actor known for his roles in Top Gun, The Doors, and Batman Forever, has died at the age of 65.

His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, revealed that the cause of death was pneumonia, according to The New York Times.

While Val Kilmer had battled throat cancer since his diagnosis in 2014, she confirmed that he had later recovered.

Originally a stage actor, Kilmer made his Hollywood breakthrough in 1984 with Top Secret!, a Cold War comedy where he played a rock star.

Two years later, he cemented his place in pop culture as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, the confident fighter pilot rival to Tom Cruise’s Maverick in Top Gun.

Throughout his career, Val Kilmer balanced major blockbuster films with independent projects.

He gained critical acclaim portraying Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors, capturing the rock icon’s psychedelic rise to fame.

He later starred in Heat alongside Al Pacino and Robert De Niro before donning the cape as Gotham’s masked vigilante in Batman Forever.

Despite his success, Kilmer was known for his eccentric personality and sometimes difficult reputation on set. A 1996 Entertainment Weekly cover labeled him “The Man Hollywood Loves to Hate.”

However, later interviews painted a different picture, portraying him as charismatic, humorous, and deeply passionate about his craft.

Born Val Edward Kilmer on December 31, 1959, he was the youngest student ever accepted into Juilliard’s drama program.

He made his Broadway debut in 1983 alongside Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon before transitioning to film.

While he aspired to work on serious projects, Kilmer found himself in a mix of blockbuster hits and commercial misfires in the early 2000s.

By the 2010s, he was staging a comeback with a one-man show about Mark Twain, a project he hoped to turn into a film before his cancer diagnosis.

His life and career were explored in the 2021 documentary Val, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film depicted his struggles with his health and his reflections on his Hollywood journey. Variety described him as a man who had faced setbacks but remained true to himself.

Kilmer made a brief but emotional return to the big screen in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), reprising his role as Iceman. The film acknowledged his real-life health struggles, giving him a poignant farewell on screen.

Reflecting on his life, Kilmer once wrote, “For more than half a century, I have been honing my art, no matter the medium—literature, movies, poetry, painting, music, or tracking exotic and beautiful wildlife.”

Val Kilmer is survived by his two children, Mercedes and Jack Kilmer.

KanyiDaily also reported that Samsung Electronics co-CEO, Han Jong-Hee died at the age of 63 after suffering cardiac arrest on Tuesday.
