Diamond Bank Founder, Pascal Dozie Is Dead

Pascal Dozie, the founder of the now-defunct Diamond Bank and a former chairman of MTN Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 85.

The news was confirmed in a statement released by his family on Tuesday.

According to his son, Uzoma Dozie, the respected businessman died in the early hours of April 8, 2025.

With deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, on 8th April 2025

“He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith. His life was marked by service–to God, his family, and his country.

“He is survived by his loving wife, Chinyere, his children, grandchildren, and all who were blessed to know him.

“We thank God for the gift of his life and the legacy he leaves behind.May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement reads.

Pascal Dozie, who was born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, grew up in a Catholic household where his father, Charles Dozie, served as a catechist.

He began his education at Our Lady’s School in Emekuku, then continued to Holy Ghost Juniorate Seminary and Holy Ghost College in Owerri, where he earned his secondary school certificate.

Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he later moved to the United Kingdom. There, he earned a degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and went on to obtain a Master’s in Administrative Science from City University, London.

He also studied Operational Research and Industrial Engineering.

Dozie was a key figure in shaping Nigeria’s banking and telecom sectors. He founded Diamond Bank in 1990, guiding it to become one of the country’s top financial institutions before it merged with Access Bank. His son, Uzoma, later succeeded him as CEO.

He also played a foundational role in the rise of MTN Nigeria, serving as its first chairman and helping lay the groundwork for the telecom boom that transformed communication in the country.

Known for his calm leadership, integrity, and foresight, Dozie earned national and international respect, including being awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the Niger.

Pascal Dozie’s impact on Nigeria’s economy, business environment, and society at large remains significant. He is survived by his wife, five children, and many who admired his contributions.
