EFCC Probes Two Men Caught With Fake $899,800 In Kano

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kano has begun investigating two men arrested with nearly $900,000 in suspected counterfeit U.S. dollars.

A statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday said the suspects were apprehended by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) while traveling along Maiduguri Road in Wudil, Kano.

The two men were reportedly on their way to Kila village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State in a commercial Golf 3 vehicle when they were stopped.

During a routine search, NDLEA operatives found the fake dollar bills hidden inside a carton of Maggi Star seasoning cubes.

“Upon search, the NDLEA team discovered the suspected fake notes concealed inside a Maggi Star seasoning carton. The suspects and exhibits were subsequently handed over to the EFCC for further investigation,” the statement reads.

The suspects, Abubakar Hussaini and Sahabi Adamu, were then handed over to the EFCC along with the seized items for further investigation.

Reports suggest that the men were heading to meet a man named Muhammad Walo, who was supposed to introduce them to one Mallam Mashiru.

Mashiru is said to be a self-proclaimed spiritualist who allegedly promised to turn the fake currency into real money using ritual prayers.

“Preliminary findings revealed that the suspects were transporting the counterfeit currency to Kila Village to meet one Muhammad Walo, who was to introduce them to Mallam Mashiru, a self-proclaimed spiritualist claiming to be capable of ‘transforming’ counterfeit dollars into genuine currency through ritual prayers,” the statement added.

The EFCC stated that both suspects remain in custody and will face prosecution once the investigation is complete.

KanyiDaily recalls that the EFCC recently arrested two Chinese nationals and six Nigerians over their alleged involvement in illegal mining in Ogere, Ogun State.
