The Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Faggie, confirmed that the crash happened on Saturday at the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area.
The victims were travelling in a bus owned by the sports commission when it reportedly veered off the bridge and crashed, leading to the death of the 21 athletes.
Several survivors have been taken to the Kura General Hospital for urgent medical care. However, the number of injured people remains unclear, as rescue efforts are still ongoing.
Taking to his X page, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed his grief over the incident, describing the athletes as bright and talented individuals who represented the best of Nigeria’s youth.
Atiku called the deaths a huge loss to their families, Kano State, and the nation’s sporting community. He also urged the government to take stronger steps toward ensuring road safety and preventing future tragedies.
He wrote, “I am heartbroken by news of the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 21 Kano State athletes returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta.
“These young men and women who have been cut in their prime represent the very best of our nation; dedicated, talented, and full of promise.
“Their untimely passing is a profound loss not only to their families and the people of Kano but to the entire country. It is imperative that we put in place and enforce safety measures to stem accidents and prevent loss of lives.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Kano State Government, and Nigeria’s sporting community. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may the injured recover swiftly. -AA”
