Godswill Akpabio is currently facing serious accusations, including sexual harassment and being linked to election rigging during the 2019 general elections.
The situation intensified after a public clash in February between Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.
Following the incident, Natasha Akpoti was suspended in March and later accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.
Adding to the controversy, the Court of Appeal in Calabar upheld the conviction of Professor Peter Ogban, a University of Calabar lecturer, who was found guilty of falsifying election results in Akpabio’s favour when he ran for Senate under the APC in 2019.
Despite these issues, Akpabio stood his ground during Thursday’s Senate session, saying he refuses to be pressured into resignation over what he called false claims.
He responded to a comment by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who advised lawmakers to stay focused on their duties and avoid getting distracted.
“I will not have answered you, but for the fact that you said those who would have asked you to step down. Who told you I was going to step down?” Akpabio said.
“You know, if you watch the colour of America, there are Black people who went to prison for false allegations. Some were there for 25 years.
“So, I’m not one of those people who will step down over false allegations. When it is eventually proven that the allegation is false, they will say, ‘Oh well… I’m not that bad.’
He also addressed any assumptions that he might be planning to resign, saying, “if you had that in mind, please cancel it. I must thank you for the words you spoke today.”
KanyiDaily recalls that Godswill Akpabio recently asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to order Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to take down a satirical apology she posted on social media.
