Ex-Convict Arrested For Scamming 17 Women And Stealing Their Phones In Kano

Kano State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old ex-convict, Mohammed Usman, for allegedly scamming women and stealing their mobile phones by pretending to represent a government aid program.

Usman, who lives in the Kofar Wambai area, was caught on July 14, 2025, after a woman from Ahmadiyya Brigade Quarters reported that he deceived her into handing over her phone, claiming he was helping her access a government support scheme.

A statement released on Saturday by police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Kiyawa said at least 17 other women have since come forward with similar complaints.

“The suspect called unsuspecting women, claimed to be offering support from a government programme, gained their trust, then made away with their phones,” Kiyawa said.

Further investigation led to the arrest of three suspected buyers of the stolen phones, and police were able to recover eight devices.

Kano Police Commissioner, CP Ibrahim Bakori, has urged the public to be cautious about suspicious offers and promised that the police will continue cracking down on fraud and theft in the state.
