Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28.

The shocking news comes less than two weeks after his wedding with his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in Porto. The couple had three children together.
It was gathered Jota was traveling with his younger brother, André, a 26-year-old footballer, when their car crashed on the A-52 highway near Cernadilla in Zamora, a region in Castilla y León, Spain.
Emergency services confirmed receiving multiple calls about the incident, revealing that the car was already in flames when responders arrived at the scene.
The statement read, “The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.”
Liverpool Football Club also reacted with deep sadness in statement on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” the club said.
“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.”
Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he had played on loan since 2017 before making the move permanent in 2018.
He played a key role in Liverpool’s recent success, helping the team win the Premier League title last season, as well as the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in 2022.
Born in Portugal, Jota began his football journey with Paços de Ferreira. He signed for Atletico Madrid in 2016 but never made a competitive appearance for them, spending time on loan at Porto and later Wolves before settling into English football.
He made his senior debut for Portugal in 2019 and went on to represent his country at the European Championships in both 2020 and 2024.
Though injury kept him out of the 2022 World Cup, he played a role in Portugal’s success in the UEFA Nations League, which they won twice, including the most recent edition in May.
Jota also featured in the 2022 Champions League final, where Liverpool lost narrowly to Real Madrid. His energy, skill, and dedication earned him a place in the hearts of fans at both club and country level.
