Investors on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) recorded losses as market capitalisation declined by ₦110.16 billion following sell-offs in key large-cap stocks during trading activities.
The NGX All-Share Index fell as profit-taking continued to weigh on market sentiment, with market capitalisation sliding to ₦162.39 trillion from the previous session’s higher levels. The decline reflected sustained pressure on banking and consumer goods stocks, which have remained targets of institutional and retail profit-taking following strong September performance.
Large-cap banking counters including GTCO, Access Corp, ETI and Zenith Bank continued to face selling pressure as investors locked in gains from earlier rallies. Consumer goods stocks also recorded weakness as the market rotation toward defensive and mid-cap plays persisted.
Year-to-date performance remained positive despite the session’s losses, with the NGX All-Share Index maintaining gains above its year-open levels. However, the recent pullback signals investor caution ahead of upcoming Q3 2026 corporate earnings announcements, which are expected to drive market direction in the coming weeks.
Analysts attributed the weakness to profit-taking rather than fundamental deterioration, suggesting the market remains supported by positive economic developments and improving corporate earnings outlooks. The NGX continues to monitor trading volumes and breadth indicators as investors await clarity on company performance metrics for the third quarter.
