Former Police IG, Solomon Arase Dies In Abuja Hospital

Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase has died at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja.

Solomon Arase, who served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police, reportedly died on Sunday, August 31.

As of the time of filing this report, neither his family nor the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued an official statement confirming the development.

Arase led the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the force’s top intelligence department, before his appointment as IGP.

Born on June 21, 1956, in Owan West, Edo State, he earned a degree in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University in 1980 and joined the police force the following year, on December 1, 1981. He later studied Law at the University of Benin and obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos.

Throughout his career, Arase served in several important roles, including Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence. He also represented Nigeria in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Namibia and was a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

Arase retired on June 21, 2016, after attaining the official retirement age.

KanyiDaily recalls that in January 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Solomon Arase as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, a position he held until June 2024, when President Bola Tinubu removed him.
