The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the Edo Central senatorial by-election.

The Returning Officer, Kingsley Omo-Iwoze, announced the result early on Sunday, confirming that Ikpea secured 105,129 votes. His closest challenger, Joe Okojie of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), finished with 15,146 votes.

Speaking after the announcement, Ikpea dedicated his victory to God and to the people of Edo Central, “who have chosen vision over sentiment, progress over politics-as-usual”.

He assured constituents that he would not let them down, saying, “This victory reaffirms the people’s faith in our capacity to deliver. I will not disappoint them.

“I will work hand in hand with our governor, our party, and community leaders to ensure that every part of Edo central feels the impact of quality representation.”

Ikpea pledged to work closely with Governor Monday Okpebholo, his party, and community leaders to ensure that development reaches every part of the district.

He praised Okpebholo as a selfless and strategic leader who remains strongly connected to the people.

The senator-elect outlined his priorities, which include pushing for laws and initiatives that address infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, and support for traditional institutions.

The by-election was held to fill the vacant seat left after Okpebholo, who previously represented Edo Central in the Senate, became governor in September 2024.

KanyiDaily also reported that Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won the Anambra South senatorial by-election held on Saturday.
