Tinubu Congratulates D’Tigress For Winning Fifth Consecutive AfroBasket Title

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for winning the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.

The team secured the title on Saturday after beating Mali 78-64 in the final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan.

With this win, Nigeria becomes the first country to claim the Women’s Afrobasket championship five consecutive times in a row.

D’Tigress also earned a direct spot at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Berlin, Germany.

Reacting to their win, President Tinubu praised the players, saying they have “made Nigeria proud”.

The president also revealed that he’s looking forward to welcoming the team and the trophy in Abuja.

Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud. Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies. You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work.

“By winning the AfroBasket trophy for a record fifth consecutive time, you have written your names in history and shown the world what to expect out of Africa,” the President stated.

Tinubu also lauded Head Coach Rena Wakama and her technical team for their exemplary leadership and the Nigeria Basketball Federation for their steadfast support.

“The Federal Government and Nigerians will never forget the sacrifices and remain grateful for the highly elevating performances.

“The government and the people of Nigeria celebrate you and assure you of our continued support as you prepare for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments next March.”

D’Tigress now have a total of seven Afrobasket titles and remain unbeaten in the tournament for nearly ten years. Their last loss came on October 2, 2015, against Cameroon.

Nigeria first won the Women’s Afrobasket in 2003 and followed up with another win in the next edition. Since 2017, they’ve claimed victory in every edition of the tournament.

KanyiDaily recalls that President Bola Tinubu recently honoured the Super Falcons for winning Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, rewarding them with national awards, cash prizes, and houses.
